Alex Lifeson is probably the most underrated guitarist, he can shred!

    • @Snowdogkh
      @Snowdogkh 6 лет назад +17

It's funny they cut this up so bad so it's so hard to really appreciate what they're trying to do here but when you listen to Grand Finale he is so tuned into listening to the drums that he's completely forgetting about the fact that Alex is absolute shredding their faces off!!!

    • @speedknob
      @speedknob 6 лет назад +20

I don't think he's under-rated, he is highly respected and often imitated. Under rated guitarists are like Prince (famous but not so much for guitar) and Lindsay Buckingham.

    • @somersetcace1
      @somersetcace1 6 лет назад +20

@@speedknob I would agree with that. I see what you're saying. In Alex's case, it wasn't so much that he was underrated, more like a combination of being overshadowed by arguably the best bassist and drummer in the business, at the time anyway, and that they never really hit mainstream, mostly because of Geddy's voice. It's an acquired taste. Unless you're a musician and then you fell in love in the first 10 seconds. And back in the day, this was definitely a musicians band. I would add that you're right about Prince, but not in my case. I saw his genius on guitar the moment I saw him play one.

    • @speedknob
      @speedknob 6 лет назад +5

@@somersetcace1 Can't argue with that clarification! You're definitely spot on about Lee's voice, it's generally a love it or leave it kind of thing. First time I heard them was when Farewell to Kings was fresh off the press, and they've been my favorite since I heard Cinderella Man.

Favorite Classic drummers - Neil Peart, John Bonham, Nick Mason (doesn't get enough recognition for mostly playing in the pocket), and I have a soft spot for Stewart Copeland from the Police, but there are many other greats to choose from.
Favorite Metal drummers - Mike Portnoy, Thomas Haake, Gene Hoglan, Danny Carrey, again there are many other greats to choose from.

Happy to see this forgotten classic get some love. What's really crazy is this album was something RUSH put out as a middle finger to their record label and the main stream money machine. Anthem, their record label, was pressuring the band for a 3 1/2 min radio friendly single (similar to RUSH's early works). But the band had evolved as composers and were into "concept" ideas. They had an idea for an album that would tell a story. An operatic story about music and how it has the power to free you. When RUSH presented 2112 to their label they didn't know what to make of it. This was 1976. The disco era. RUSH put out a science fiction proto-metal album with nothing that was radio playable. It didn't get played on the radio, but it spoke to all of us that were into more than the themes that are presented in main stream music. It was hard, fast, heavy, but deep, insightful and inspiring. It got no radio play. They sold out their shows though because they were true artists giving you a perspective that no one else did. 2112 became a gold album and gave RUSH the clout to tell Anthem to F*** OFF. Never again would a record label tell RUSH what to create. RUSH were gangsters. They didn't give a F***. They stuck to their guns and conquered the world.

      He is like Ringo Starr

He just has the greatest timeing

The recent loss of Neil Peart has many fans retreading old ground in nostalgia. One is compelled to observe that the Elder Race had been watching for some time the moral erosion of their home World. The vision they sent to the protagonist wasn't by accident. The causal nature of his despondent suicide (23:05) was a galactic slap in the face and they returned with an army to put an end to the Priests of Syrinx once and for all. The proceeding fast finale is them arriving with fleets of starships, bombers and attack fighters reducing the mechanized foul harvest of the Priests to ash. (Explosions) 'Attention All Planets of the Federation. We have assumed control' is their pronouncement of victory, the Priests are dead, sanity, dignity and respect for human expression has been reclaimed. It's good to see that the bands work remains quite relevant today considering all the political attempts to quash Freedom of Speech and rights to self preservation.

@@charleshutton284 the vast, vast majority of leftists only want to stop disparaging and derogatory speech toward aspects of people that those people have no choice about. 5retsam i think the fact that Rush went very deep into the prog style in the 80’s with a lot of synthesizer sounds took much of the recognition that Alex actually deserves being undisputedly one of the best guitarist to have ever roamed the earth imo

The band thought this might have been their last album, because their previous album didn't do so well. So the record company wanted this album to be more radio friendly (shorter songs), but they decided....FU record label! If we're done. We're going out on our terms. I think you can feel their anger at what they faced, and so, they decided to "stick it to the man" one last time. Well, this album sold like crazy. So the record company decided that "we obviously don't get it". Go ahead and do what you want. So from that point on. Rush had total musical freedom to do as they wished and the rest is history 😁
    Take care!

A little different from the producers. They always went back and forth with their producers. Even they said that 2112 gave them the paspatou to do anything they wanted after that.

Punk was a necessary evil in the fact that people with absolutely no
talent at all needed a place in music as well. No disrespect just
stating a fact. If you wanted to sing but sounded like shit, if you
wanted to play guitar but didn't really want to learn or worry about
tuning, if you had little or no sense of time-keeping then Punk Rock was
the home for you. Punk was the Land of the Misfit Toys.

You guys pretty much nailed the meaning of the song in the first go! One thing I want to clarify for you is the section "Presentation". You infer that it's "Reading Ranbowish", it's supposed to be like that. Think about the beginning of the song where it says "and the meek shall inherit the Earth" and how the Priests subjugate the masses by controlling every aspect of their lives. The protagonist in the story approaches the Priests timidly and with trepidation, or "meekly". The section is supposed to represent him as meek and the Priests as powerful. Am a 50 year old Rush fan who discovered them in 1979. I started taking drum lessons in 1980 singularly because of this band and can attest that Peart is a freaking God on the drums. Absolutely insane!
It's also funny you referenced Alice an Chains and Dusturbed. There are a lot of musicians out there who credit Rush for their inspiration, including both of these bands. The nerd mention is partially true, but Rush is a musicians band. If you have ever been to one of their concerts, you would have seen that the majority of attendees are air drumming and guitaring.
Trust me.on this, you need to deep dive into their collection. They've been together for over 40 years and are just incredible. The ridiculous thing is that even though they've had such a huge influence on rock music, have a huge following and have sold an incredible amount of records, they were only inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a few years ago.
Now, if you are at all looking for another suggestion with Rush from a musician's standpoint, I have many. I can honestly say anything from Moving Pictures or Signals as both of those albums are masterpieces, however, for single suggestions I would have a few:
    1. If you're looking for something a little off the beaten path, the song Losing It off of Signals tells the stories of people "losing it" in the sense of growing older and not being able to do the things they used to be able to. For instance, the first verse is about a dancer who remembers the fame and being on stage but her body is tired and as she ages, her bode isn't able to do the things her mind wants or remembers. There's even a reference to Ernest Hemingway at the end. Excellent musical transitions and tempo changes.
    2. If you're really adventurous, and after 2112, I think you're ready for this, a real deep cut which demonstrates their incredible musical talent and lyricism, Cygnus X-1 is a must. It's a story based in the future about an explorer who travels to an x-ray source thought to be a black hole believing something may be beyond it. Highly suggested to listen with headphones... Just try and keep up with the key signature changes! I mean they're switching time EVERY MEASURE for a while, and funky signatures like 5/4 to 6/4 to 11/8 to 4/4 to 3/4 to 7/8 to 3/4 and on and on but it meshes incredibly well...
    3. Another deep cut that I would highly recommend is Countdown. The song is about NASA's shuttle program and the whole thing is about the tension in the "countdown" and elation after the shuttle launch. Much of the song has the actual countdown and chatter from a launch.
    4. Like dystopian stories? I would then suggest Red Sector A. It's a song about a first-person account of being in a prison camp, very much like the Jews in German concentration camps back in the WWII era. Geddy Lee's (the basist/vocalist) mother was actually liberated from a concentration camp and the song is loosely based on that liberation. However, the protagonist within the song tries to escape with his family, but is found out and during the escape has to choose who he will help escape and who he will have to let die because they all can't escape. He ultimately chooses his mother, leaving his father and brother. Incredibly powerful lyrics
    5. A song with incredible meaning is Manhattan Project. It was literally about the Manhattan Project which developed the nuclear bombs continuing to when they were dropped on Japan to end WWII. Very much like Countdown, it's an accurate depiction of events leading up to the final conclusion.
    5. Want something a little more mainstream? Give a listen to Red Barchetta. It's a song with the story based in a dystopian future in which vehicles are banned (the "motor law"). The protagonist's thing to do is to go to his uncle's house, which "used to be a farm, before the motor law", and drive his red Barchetta. In the song, he gets found out and is chased by the police and he has to lose them or possibly be killed. It's very heavily based on George Orwell's 1984.
There is SO many songs to choose from, many deep cuts, many mainstream that I could suggest! The Trees, Jacob's Ladder, Hemispheres and on and on and on... If you dug 2112, you are Rush fans and it would be a disservice to not encourage you to learn why this band is considered to be masters and why so many musicians attribute their craft to them.

      Full details on 2112:
      I. Overture
“And the meek shall inherit the earth.”
      II. Temples of Syrinx
“…The massive grey walls of the Temples rise from the Heart of every Federation city. I have always been awed by them, to think that every single facet of every life is regulated and directed from within! Our books, our music, our work and play are all looked after by the benevolent wisdom of the priests…”
      We’ve taken care of everything
      The words you read
      The songs you sing
      The pictures that give pleasure
      To your eye
One for all and all for one
      Work together
      Common sons
      Never need to wonder
      How or why
      We are the Priests
      Of the Temples of Syrinx
      Our great computers
      Fill the hallowed halls
      We are the Priests
      Of the Temples of Syrinx
      All the gifts of life
      Are held within our walls
Look around this world we made
      Equality
      Our stock in trade
      Come and join the Brotherhood
      Of Man
      What a nice contented world
      Let the banners
      Be unfurled
      Hold the Red Star proudly
      High in hand.
      III. Discovery
“…Behind my beloved waterfall, in the little room that was hidden beneath the cave, I found it. I brushed away the dust of the years, and picked it up, holding it reverently in my hands. I had no idea what it might be, but it was beautiful…”
“…I learned to lay my fingers across the wires, and to turn the keys to make them sound differently. As I struck the wires with my other hand, I produced my first harmonious sounds, and soon my own music! How different it could be from the music of the Temples! I can’t wait to tell the priests about it! …”
What can this strange device be?
When I touch it, it gives forth a sound
It’s got wires that vibrate, and give music
What can this thing be that I found?
See how it sings like a sad heart
And joyously screams out its pain
Sounds that build high like a mountain
Or notes that fall gently, like rain.
I can’t wait to share this new wonder
The people will all see its light
Let them all make their own music
The Priests praise my name on this night.
      IV. Presentation
“…In the sudden silence as I finished playing, I looked up to a circle of grim, expressionless faces. Father Brown rose to his feet, and his somnolent voice echoed throughout the silent Temple Hall…”
“…Instead of the grateful joy that I expected, they were words of quiet rejection! Instead of praise, sullen dismissal. I watched in shock and horror as Father Brown ground my precious instrument to splinters beneath his feet…”
      I know it’s most unusual
      To come before you so
But I’ve found an ancient miracle
I thought that you should know
      Listen to my music
And hear what it can do
There’s something here as strong as life
I know that it will reach you.
      The Priests:
      Yes, we know
      It’s nothing new
It’s just a waste of time
We have no need for ancient ways
      Our world is doing fine
      Another toy
      That helped destroy
      The elder race of man
      Forget about your silly whim
      It doesn’t fit the plan
      I can’t believe you’re saying
These things just can’t be true
Our world could use this beauty
Just think what we might do
      The Priests:
      Don’t annoy us further
We have our work to do.
      Just think about the average
What use have they for you?
      V. Oracle: The Dream
“…I guess it was a dream, but even now it all seems so vivid to me. Clearly yet I see the beckoning hand of the oracle as he stood at the summit of the staircase…”
“…I see still the incredible beauty of the sculptured cities, and the pure spirit of man revealed in the lives and works of this world. I was overwhelmed by both wonder and understanding as I saw a completely different way to life, a way that had been crushed by the Federation long ago. I saw now how meaningless life had become with the loss of all these things…”
I wandered home though the silent streets
And fell into a fitful sleep
Escape to realms beyond the night
Dream - can’t you show me the light
I stand atop a spiral stair
      An oracle confronts me there
He leads me on, light years away
      Through astral nights, galactic days
I see the works of gifted hands
Grace this strange and wondrous land
I see the hand of man arise
With hungry mind and open eyes
They left the planet long ago
The elder race still learn and grow
Their power grows with purpose strong
To claim the home where they belong
Home to tear the Temples down
      Home to change -
      VI. Soliloquy
“…I have not left this cave for days now, it has become my last refuge in my total despair. I have only the music of the waterfall to comfort me now. I can no longer live under the control of the Federation, but there is no other place to go. My last hope is that with my death I may pass into the world of my dream, and know peace at last…”
The sleep is still in my eyes
The dream is still in my head
I heave a sigh, and sadly smile
And lie a while in bed
I wish that it might come to pass
Not fade like all my dreams
Just think of what my life might be
In a world like I have seen
      I don’t think I can carry on
      This cold and empty life
My spirits are low, in the depths of despair
      My lifeblood
      Spills over….
      VII. The Grand Finale
Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation
Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation
Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation
      We have assumed control.
      We have assumed control.
      We have assumed control.

This album was Rush's fourth. Their record company was upset with them because the previous album, Caress of Steel, was a commercial failure. Basically, it was too "experimental" and "weird". So when they went into the studio, the company told them they'd better write some hit singles or they were gonna get dropped. So the boys in the band had a little meeting amongst themselves, and agreed together that, if this was going to be the end their career, they were going to end it on their own terms: making the music they wanted to make.
They finished the 2112 album, and the record company hated it so much that they gave it no promotion whatsoever. And then a strange thing happened. The album went GOLD, almost entirely on the strength of word-of-mouth. People heard it and were amazed, and they told their friends, who told THEIR friends.
After that, their record company threw up their hands and said, "Okay, you guys just do whatever you want. We'll leave you alone."

My reaction was much like yours and I was an instant fan of Rush. Keep up the fine work!

James Watt that’s nearly identical to my Rush story. Then years later, I was listening to Chronicles while taking my son to school one day & later when I picked him up he immediately wanted to hear the song that had been playing when I dropped him off that morning because it had been stuck in head all day. It happened to be “The Trees”, & he took it to his guitar teacher that week so he could learn how to play it. He’s been a Rush fan ever since (he was 14 at the time & is 26 now.)! My Canadian mother played this in our car one day when I was little. My young Italian ass wasn't ready. I started asking about who this was, what was she saying (I was so young I confused Geddy's voice for a woman's). It felt all so interesting listening to something like this for the first time as a child. It had explosions, water running, amazing music and everithing a boy my age would love. I felt like I could imagine a movie playing in my head.. Listening to what my mother traduced for me, got me into learning english at a very young age just to be part of this, got me closer to poetry and arts. I discovered what I liked as the man discovered that guitar, day after day in my mom's car. One of the best memories in my life.

The basic story is in the year 2112, where much entertainment is controlled by the Priests, a guy finds an old guitar and presents it to the Priests. He says it’s amazing and will make lives better. They destroy it, claiming it’s part of what destroyed the Elder Race of Man. The man falls into depression because he discovered something great and can’t imagine life without it. He was told of how it was in the past and that the Elders left long ago. He later then kills himself, realizing that how the world is now isn’t worth living. Then in the Grand Finale, the Elders return and overthrow the priests, regaining control of the Solar Federation.

I love how they instinctively do the "HEY!" thing, like the entire crowd of a rush show does, and has done for all the decades Overture or Temples have been played live... It just shows you how great music can tap right into our core and show us all that even though we are all different, some things are universally human, and we aren't as different as we might think.
Oh, and the Solar Federation are the ancient humans returning to Earth to take it back from the control of the Temple. They had been gone for ages, exploring the stars. The people that were under the Temple's control were the ancestors of the people that stayed behind, because they didn't have the adventurous spirit of ambition to explore..

  • @Relyx

My absolute favourite thing about this song is how they incorporate the sound of him learning to play guitar and just playing different things on it into the actual song. I mean it's just fucking genius. He starts off just plucking at a string, slowly learning a melody and a chord and so on. Of course he's an impossibly quick learner, but just that that is part of the song and it still fits is just so clever and interesting.

Bit of history. Their label did not like the poor sales of the previous album and pushed them to go into a musical direction they did not want to. Kind of like the priests telling everyone what to like and listen to? The boys in Rush thought this would be their last album so they made what they wanted their way to flip the bird to the record label kind of like the man discovering the guitar. Turns out the album really hit with a fan base, a true rock n roll rebellion album. It bought Rush their artistic freedom and the label never tried to push them again. Next came some of the greatest music not just of the late 70’s but of all time. Permanent Waves, Hemispheres, farewell to kings and Moving Pictures. I was ten and first hear 2112 on vinyl. I was hooked for life! Truly 20 minutes that changed my life

    4. they dismiss it and destroy the guitar
    5. he sees a vision of the past and old ways and sees the elder race leaving earth for the stars

No real need to comment on most of this since you basically figured out the lyrics as you went. A few little details, though, that your patrons may or may not have already mentioned... the elder race of man mentioned in the lyrics are an ancient human civilization that left the planet to explore space and the priests are the humans who remained on Earth to establish a totalitarian theocracy/technocracy.
At the end, it's not explicitly clear what happens. I suspect that given Neil's interest in Ayn Rand and libertarianism when he was younger that he had in mind that the Man viewed the return of the Elder Race as a hopeless dream and killed himself rather than submitting to the Temple when they reasserted control. That's the most common interpretation I've seen from other Rush fans over the years.
I've always preferred a different interpretation though. Because the Temple should theoretically already have control and the lyric is "We have *assumed* control", I think it's the Elder Race actually coming back to remove the Temple's tyranny. I take the ending as an ironic one, where the Man kills himself in despair just before the Elder Race returns to save mankind. I see it as a message not to give up hope just because a better future seems impossible in the moment.
